| Beating the Odds Award (Parent Award) |
The winner will recieve a $1,000 award, the first runner-up will recieve $300, and the second runner-up will receive $100. Each will recieve a commemorative plaque. Applicant must be a Head Start parent and not a paid employee during the 2009-2010 school year. Applicant must have volunteered in the Head Start program. Applicant must be an individual member of NHSA. All questions must be answered in their entirety. Application is due September 14, 2010

| Parent of the Year Award (Parent Award) |
The Rutha Weatherl Parent of the Year Award winner will receive a $1,000 award, the first runner-up will receive $300, and the second runner-up will receive $100. Each will receive a commemorative plaque. Applicant must be a Head Start parent and not a paid employee during the 2009-2010 school year. Applicant must have volunteered in Head Start program. Applicant must be a member of NHSA. All quesionts must be answered in their entirety. Application is due September 14, 2010 |

| Administer of the Year Award-Head Start Assistant or Deputy Director(Staff) |
The Administrator of the Year will receive an award certificate and a $500 award. Applicant must serve as the Head Start program assistant or deputy director. The local program must be a current member of NHSA or the applicant must be an individual NHSA member. Applicant must be a program employee for at least three years. Applicant must have at least a bachelor's degree. Three letters of reference must be included with the application. All questions must be answered in their entirety. Application is due December 28, 2010 |
| Ann Phipps Memorial Scholarship (Parent) |
Each winner of the Ann Phipps Memorial Scholarship will receive $1,500 to be applied to an institution of higher learning. Applicant must be a Head Start parent during the 2009-2010 school year. The applicant must be an individual member of NHSA. Applicant must prove acceptance or enrollment in an institution of higher learning. Three letters of reference must be included with the application. All questions must be answered in their entirety. Application is due December 28, 2010 |
Bright Smiles, Bright Futures, Oral Health Grant
(Staff/Student) |
The winner of the Bright Smiles, Bright Futures Oral Health Grant will receive an award certificate and $4,000 to enhance its oral health program. Applicant must be a Head Start program that sufficiently outlines how this award will be used to promote oral health practices in the classroom, including parent involvement and utilization of the Colgate, Bright Smiles, Bright Futures program. The local program must be a current member of NHSA. All questions must be answered in their entirety. Application is due December 28, 2009 |
Curtis Pride Scholarship
(Student) |
The winner of the Curtis Pride Scholarship will receive an award certificate and $1,000 to be applied to an institution of higher learning. Applicant must be a hearing impaired student. Applicant must be an individual member of NHSA. Applicant must prove acceptance of enrollment in an institution of higher learning. Three letters of reference must be included with the application. All questions must be answered in their entirety. Application is due December 28, 2010 |
Father of the Year Award
(Parent) |
The Head Start Father of the Year award will receive a $500 award and an award certificate. Nominee must be the father of a child or children in Head Start during the 2009-2010 school year. The Program Performance Standards 1306.3(h) definition of a father will be adhered to. Nominee must model increased educational involvement and personal responsiblity in the lives of his own children as well as improved personal development resulting from his Head Start experience. The local program must be a current member of NHSA, or the applicant must be an individual member of NHSA. All questions must be answered in their entirety. Application is due December 28, 2010 |
| Helen Hollingshed Taylor Memorial Scholarship (Staff) |
The winner may draw up to $3,000, over the course of three years. These funds may be applied to the documented cost ot tuition and/or books for the graduates school or doctoral degree program. Applicant must be a Head Start/Early Head Start director currently enrolled in an advanced degree program or preparing to pursue a master's or doctoral degree. The local program must be a current member of NHSA or the applicant must be an individual member of NHSA. Applicant must be a program employee for at least five years and a Head Start director for three years. Applicant must show proof of accpetance to graduate school or a doctoral degree program that relates to early childhood and human services. Three letters of reference must be included with the application. All questions must be answered in their entirety. Application is due December 28, 2010 |
| Humanitarian of the Year Award |
The recipient of the Humanitarian of the Year Award will receive a specially designed plaque. Nominee must be an individual or organization that made a voluntarty contribution of time and effort, without regard to religious or ethnic affiliation, that has had a positive impact upon children, families, and/or communities. The local program must be a current member of NHSA or the applicant must be an individual member of NHSA. The contribution must have occurred within, or in preparation for the 2009-2010 school year. All questions must be answered in their entirety. Application is due December 28, 2010 |
| Margaret M. Coughlin Memorial Award Head Start Coordinator of Disablitiy Services (Staff) |
The winner of the Margaret M. Coughlin Memorial Award will receive an award certificate and a $500 award. Applicant must be a Head Start/Early Head Start Coordinator of Disablitiy Services or in a combined position responsible for disability services. The local program must be a current member of NHSA or the applicant must be an individual member of NHSA. Applicant must be a program employee for at least three years. Applicant must have credentials beyond a high school diploma. Three letters of reference must be included with the application. All questions must be answer in their entirety. Application is due December 28, 2010 |
| NHSA Corporate Award |
The recipient of the NHSA Corporate Award will receive a specially designed plaque. Nominee must be a corporation that demonstrates commitment to the goals and objectives of Head Start and/or promotes special porjects that benefit poor children and their families. The local program must be a current member of NHSA or the applicant must be an individual member of NHSA. All questions must be answered in their entirety. Application is due December 28, 2010 |
| NHSA Leadership Award |
The recipient of the NHSA Leadership Award will receive a specially designed plaque. Applicant may be a staff member, parent, director, or friend of Head Start. Applicant must demonstrate outstanding leadership qualities while working in some capacity with Head Start, either in the local program, various committees, or associations. The local program must be a current member of NHSA or the applicant must be an individual member of NHSA. All questions must be answered in their entirety. Application is due December 28, 2010 |
| Phyllis J. Jones Memorial Scholarship for Head Start Graduates (Student) |
Each winner of the Phyllis Jones Memorial Scholarship will receive $1,500 to be applied to an institution of higher learning. Applicant must be a former student and graduate of Head Start. The local program must be a member of NHSA, or the applicant must be an individual member of NHSA. Applicant must prove acceptance or enrollment in an institution of higher learning. Three letters of reference must be included with the application. All questions must be answered in their entirety. Application is due December 28, 2010 |
| Support Staff of the Year Award- Bus Driver/Transporation Service (staff) |
The Support Staff of the Year will receive an award certificate and a $500 award. Applicant must serve as a bus driver/transportation services. The local program must be a current member of NHSA or the applicant must be an individual member of NHSA. Applicant must be a program employee for at least three years.Apllicant must have credentials beyond a high school diploma. Three letters of reference must be included with the application. | Staff of the Year Award- Early Childhood Development and Health Services professional with an Emphasis on Nutrition (Staff) |
The Staff of the Year will receive a commemorative plaque and a $500 award. Applicant must serve as the Early Childhood develoment and health services professional with an emphasis on nutrition. The application must describe the applicant's responsibilities as a nutrition services specialist. The local program must be a current member of NHSA or the applicant must be an individual member of NHSA. Applicant must be a program employee for at least three years. Applicant must have credentials beyond a high school diploma. Three letters of reference must be included with the application. All questions must be answered in their entirety. Application is due December 28, 2010 |
| Teacher of the Year Award (Staff) |
PlayDesigns is a part of Playworld Systems Inc., a family-owned company that believes that playtime should last a lifetime. PlayDesigns is the first step in this journey with a line of playground products specially designed to delight toddlers and preschoolers. Kevin Winkelman, national sales manager, Playworld Systems Inc. is a Head Start graduate and is responsible for this sponsorship. Applicant must serve as a Head Start -center-based or Early Head Start - home-based teacher. The local program must be a current member of NHSA or the applicant must be an individual member of NHSA. Applicant must be a program employee for at least three years. Applicant must have credentials beyond a high school diploma. Three letters of reference must be included with the application. All questions must be answered in their entirety. Application is due December 28, 2010 |

| Edward Zigler Research Scholarship |
The winner of the Edward Zigler Research Scholarship will receive a $3,000 award that may be applied to the documented cost of tuition and/or books for a doctoral degree program. Applicant must be enrolled at an accredited college or university. Applicant must be pursuing a Ph.D. in research with and emphasis on psychology, public policy, education, or a related discipline. All documents requested must be received by NHSA by February 3, 2010. Applicants must provide a Social Security number to receive cash awards. |

| NeHSA Head Start/Early Head Start Graduates Scholarhip |
One scholarship of $250 will be available. A letter from the grantee/delegate confirming applicant. Must include a double-spaced typed summary describing personal goals in 300 words or less. Must submit a brief statement of financial need. Three (3) letters of recommendation. Proof of enrollment or proof of acceptance in an institution of higher learning. Typewritten application form. Postmark date no later than October 1, 2010. Submit all informations in duplicate. Scholarship winner will be recognized at the NeHSA Conference. |
| NeHSA Parent Scholarship |
One Scholarship for $250 will be available. Must be a Head Start/Early Head Start parent in the current year. Must be a member of the NeHSA. Must include a double-spaced typed summary describing personal goals, strides toward self-sufficiency, and your volunteer experiences in the Head Start/Early Head Start program, in 500 words or less. Postmark date no later than October 1, 2010. Submit all information in duplicate. Scholarship winner will be recognized at the NeHSA Conference. |
| NeHSA Staff Scholarship |
One Scholarship for $250 will be available. Applicant must be a member of NeHSA. The scholarship must be used for classes related to a position within the program. Must submit a typed double-spaced summary, no more than 50 words of personal goals, including plans for furthering their education. Must submit a typed double-spaced statement, no more than 150 words, indicating your beliefs in the Head Start philosophy. Three references: one personal, one professional peer, and one supervisor. Postmark date no later than October 1, 2010. Submit all information in duplicate. Scholarship winner will be recognized at the NeHSA Conference. |
